Welcome to FloodRiskNet
FloodRiskNet is a cross-disciplinary network of excellence that aims to address the problems of flood, dam, and coastal erosion risk analysis. The network brings together UK academics in the fields of engineering, probability and statistics, and environmental science, along with industrial, governmental, and professional organisations.

What is FloodRiskNet?
FloodRiskNet is a cross-disciplinary network of excellence that aims to address the problems of flooding, dam safety, and coastal erosion using risk and uncertainty analysis methods. It is concerned with statistical analysis of rainfall, fluvial flows and marine storms, reliability of flood defence and dam systems, and uncertainty in the analysis of inundation and impacts of flooding and erosion. FloodRiskNet is a response to contemporary demands for improved flood risk and uncertainty analysis and risk-based decision-making that are emerging from industry and government.
The network brings together UK academics in the fields of engineering, probability and statistics, and environmental science, along with industrial, governmental, and professional organisations.
FloodRiskNet is funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, who have provided funding from March 2002 until February 2005. FloodRiskNet is complementary to a number of other research networks.
How do I get involved?
Participation in FloodRiskNet is open to academics, practitioners, and students. This web site is intended to grow to be an information hub, and it is designed so that you can supply as well as consume information. Join using the "Want to Join?" link of the "sign in" box to the left. Once you have joined and logged in, you will find a box entitled "create item" to the left, where you can submit news, events, links to other web sites of interest, and more. Be sure to submit the item - all submissions are moderated before publication and it is only when you have submitted the item that it can be published.
How does it work?
FloodRiskNet operates via this web site, meetings and a newsletter. It sends out regular updates by email. It supports scoping and problem definition studies and international visitors.
What are it's aims?
FloodRiskNet is to address generic statistical, risk, reliability, uncertainty and decision-making techniques rather than the specific physical processes of flooding and coastal erosion. The content of this site is categorised along these lines.
FloodRiskNet has the following three broad aims:
- To develop a collaborative and widely recognised research community for UK academics working in the field of fluvial and coastal risk, reliability, and uncertainty analysis.
- To act as an information hub for exchange and dissemination of information and expertise amongst academics, government, and industry.
- To establish a strategic vision of research in the field of fluvial and coastal risk, reliability, and uncertainty analysis and to enable collaborative research proposals to UK and European research funders to address research needs in a co-ordinated way.
Who is FloodRiskNet?
FloodRiskNet is a community of researchers and practitioners with a common interest of understanding, quantifying, and managing flood risk. Those members who choose to be are listed .
FloodRiskNet co-operates with a number of professional institutes and societies and complementary networks.
FloodRiskNet is managed by Dr. Jim Hall. The steering group also includes Prof. Dominic Reeve, Prof. Jonathan Tawn, Chris Kilsby, and Prof. Ian Cluckie.
The network coordinator is Hamish Harvey, who can be reached at hamish@floodrisknet.org.uk
